bad exhaust news

Just got horrible news from my otherwise wonderful mechanic. I took my '84 900S in for a new muffler/tailpipe b/c it had fallen off backing over a snowbank (it needed to be replaced anyway).
Well, guess what. The catalytic converter is cracked and the whole exhaust needs to be replaced. He will sell me an aftermarket cat for $145, and the whole shebang, incl. labor, should cost about $500.
Does this sound reasonable? I'd trust Tom with my life, and he has put a lot of new parts on this car for me this year. He says the car runs well, and I've been told it should run another couple of years. But should I keep dumping money into it, or is this just ridiculous to pay for an '84?
BTW, I bought it for $2K in Jan. 1986 when it had 165K miles. It's got over 200K now (the odometer broke) and I've probably put about $5K into it. That works out to $100 a month to drive it. It costs $400 a year to insure.
Should I quit now while I'm "ahead" and sell it for parts, or go for the new exhaust?
