Actually the guage is really easy to access, just lift /slide off the wooden trunk bottoms and see the guage cover, which is a large screw-on plastic bottle lid (for lack of a better description). Unplug the wires, unscrew the lid, could be a bit sticky, but not usually a problem, then pull out the metal cylinder, which is the fuel sender unit. It can be dissasembled if you choose to try a repair, by carefully unscrewing the small brass nut on the very bottom, then pulling off the aluminum cylinder/tube, thereby exposing the workings of the sender. Not very impressive is it?. Basically the float runs up and down the three resistance wires giving varying resistance/ voltage to the guage, when the float reaches bottom the low fuel circuit is completed, turning on the light. If any of the wires is broken, so is your sender. Decide then if you are willing to attempt a fix, if not buy a new one. If you want to fix it and you are capable then no futher instruction is required.
