SAAB 900S won't start. Starter or Solenoid? help.

Yesterday, I drove our SAAB without a problem. I
parked it in front of my house, where it sat all
night through a rainstorm. This morning, when I
went to start the SAAB, it would crank, but I it
wouldn't start. I tried for a while, then I came
back again later in the day, but it still wouldn't
start. Then I tried jump starting the SAAB with
jumper cables connected to another car. No luck.
I didn't think the problem would be the battery
because I just bought a new one a year ago.
So, I am hoping that you can help me identify the
problem. Do I need a starter, or would the engine
not even try to turn over if the starter was bad?
Or, could I need an ignition coil (solenoid)? Is
there a way for me to tell? I tried an old trick
(I think) I remember from many years ago. With
the ignition key turned to ON, I touched a metal
tool to both poles on the starter coil, thinking
that this might start the car, but it didn't even
try to turn over. Maybe this only worked on old
cars years ago.
Could it be that moisture got under the distributor
cap, causing an problem getting started? I didn't
drive the car in the rain though.
Do you have any ideas or tests I could conduct to
figure out what is wrong?
