The 87- brakes are a pain to deal with. The parking brake on the front causes loads of problems. 88+ were easier to deal with. I don't think braking performance is really any better though. The pre 87 brake parts are easy to find used though. Also, the wheel pattern changed in 88. The wheels are not interchangeable. 88+ 900s can use 9000 wheels. Some of the 9000 wheels are cooler looking.
You can switch a 87- car to 88+ brakes, but you would need a doner car and about 15 hours of spare time.
