I have the same problem sometimes. I plan on replacing the switch, which entails taking off the lower part of the dash and taking out the console (not in that order, of course). When I do that, I'll replace the clutch pedal at the same time.
I suppose that you could lube it, but the problem is likely grit, dust, and lint that accumulate around the switch shaft and gum it up. I wouldn't doubt that a lubricant (other than graphite, which has its own electrical effects) would make gumming worse.
I talked to Jim at Sobstory earlier this week and a replacement switch is only $10 from him.
