Saabs are like Porsches and I imagine other niche market manufacturers. They rarely change drastically and continually improve in small ways over
the years. Buy the latest you can afford, one owner if possible with service records too. I have just reread the Saab Nines published during the eighties and a couple of things kept coming up- first the brakes on the 81-87 models and transmission failures. Transmissions continue to be a weak link but the later ones are better. Ditto on brakes, major redesign in '88. Turbos are better on later models with water cooling added to prolong bearing life. Early H 8 valve motors had problems with timing guide tensioners which were redesigned in late '83. 16 valve motors are sweet & very dependable, making more power. If you like to hot rod and smoke tyres, buy a Chevy or a Ford. If you want a sports car go for the best Saab, the SPG from '88 to '91. Good luck!
