The wire colors did change, but so did the harness, connectors, and the function of the lights. Don't forget, your '86 has the center-mounted parking lights - on an '87 or later, those parking lights have been relocated to the outside corner lamps. That is the most significant difference, but can pose a problem.
You are definitely gonna need a copy of the Bentley manual, or a lot of patience and a good multi-meter to check wiring. Be sure you also get "pigtails" from a donor car with the appropriate connectors.
Out of curiosity, why are you involved in the swap-over? Personally, I think the older cars are a heck of a lot better looking (less nose-heavy) and with a little work and some e-code lights, very aggressive looking to boot.
