I suppose I can understand someone willing to pay that much for the dealer doing the job. After all, it =is= a little messy, and today I still have some black junk under my fingernails. The upper hose on the reservoir was hard to get off (I was extra careful not to break the reservoir nipple, but it was a strain to pull off of there). By the time I finished, I had a gallon of dirty, oily fluid in a plastic container and several oily shop rags to deal with. It took me an hour to do it, with my wife giving me a hand at the ignition switch.
Still, the only tools involved were a screwdriver for the hose clamp, a 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet for the two reservoir mounting bolts, and a piece of hose I slipped over the return hose to pipe the waste fluid overboard into a plastic container. Oh, yeah, and two or three old towels. I used a twisted piece of paper as a plug for the upper reservoir nipple, which worked okay.
Doing it yourself means you don't flush with the magic BG44K additive, and I couldn't find synthetic P/S fluid as a replacement, so I just used the generic stuff which met all the GM, Ford, Chrysler, and foreign car specs, at a little more than $2/quart. But what's in there now is a whole lot better than what was in there yesterday. The old fluid had actually turned black!
I guess if someone would rather save $90 than keep their hands clean, it would make sense for them to attempt this themselves. Your post from a few months back gave me the incentive to try, so thanks again.
