Interior lighting question...

I know this may be a dumb question, but how is the interior lighting supposed to work in my 1989 900S? By this I mean the dome light and the big map light behind the rear view mirror.
I know there is the 3 position switch on the center console. The owners manual doesn't really say anything much about it (They probably figure a monkey could figure that out!)
Anyway, the reason I don't think I can figure it out is that my swtich obviously doesn't work. The lights work when the door is opened, when the swtich is in the bottom most position -- but sometimes I have to turn the switch to the right to get them to come on.
My problem is that I can't get ANY light to come on while the doors are closed. I would take it that one of those positions of that switch (the top most posistion, I would assume) would turn on the light, while the middle position turns them off, because the bottom position turns them on when the front doors are opend (like I said if I kind of put pressure on it by turning it right)
Would that switch be bad? Or the wiring? How much would one of those switches cost me? I have pulled the switch out and it LOOKS ok, but not sure what else to look for.
thanks for any help
