My favorite answer - it depends.
I have never seen a catastrophic failure of a main seal - namely, the seal disintegrates and dumps all the engine oil on the ground. Basically, they just drip. You replace it when you get tired of seeing the oil on your driveway. I replaced my main seal when I was getting a puddle about 2 - 3 inches in diameter on the ground every night. On a Saab I got for my folks, the dealer noted that the main seal was leaking, but I never saw more than a drip or two on the ground. We drove that car for three years without fixing.
If it's just a minor drip, you're best bet is to feed it. In terms of $$, it'll take a decade or two for the $330 up front to offset adding a little oil once in a while. If the drip is major, enough that you need to add oil on a weekly basis, then look into fixing it. Otherwise, I'd just wait until some other, more pressing maintenance action requires you to have work done in that area.
When he said 'rear', did he mean the one at the transmission (which is the rear of the engine but the front of the car), or the one at the main pulley (front of the engine, but facing the firewall?) I only ask because there is probably more chance of needing work on the pulley end sometime in the future.
Good luck!
