clutch-excessive freeplay?

I think my clutch pedal might have a little too much freeplay, but I don't know how to fix it. I can a very slight amount of freeplay between the pedal and the cylinder, and then a second section, about a inch of play, that feels like the slave cylinder is taking up the play between the throwout bearing and the pressure plate. After that the clutch is releasing. I am still getting enough travel to fully release the clutch, but the amount of intial freeplay still bothers me. Would bleeding the clutch help this? Or is it a sign of a worn clutch that needs replacement?
