A little well placed tape & a dip later, turns out the culprits are the rear-most screw area holding the rear flare molding in (the plastic "tooths" down on each side of the screw) and, to a lesser extent the uppermost screw of the rear mudflap. On a vertical line, they both extend right down to the footprint by a cm or two (the rest don't). Now I suspect it's not an offset rim problem but just the profile of the 195/60 alpines, since my 195/60 nokians don't do it (on other rims though, but I think still into the footprint on a vertical).
Hmm, now do I just grind away some of the offending plastic (& maybe screws), or raise the suspension by a 1/4" or so, or maybe just take the 2000 mile tire/plastic/screw-wearing drive route?
Decisions, decisions.
