Hi, Robin
I'm agree with Chip that the problem is likely your fuel sender unit. It sounds to me like the float moves up and down normally, since it reads full when it's full, and still triggers the low fuel light contact when the float gets to the bottom. So the float is moving. What would cause the gauge to stick at the 1/3 full indication is something wrong with the resistance windings that the float contacts in its vertical travel. It might be possible for you to repair the unit, but the simplest thing to do is to replace it with a new one.
If you want to take a shot at repairing it, you can take it out and unscrew the little nut on the bottom of it to open it up. Take a look inside, and you'll see it's a pretty simple device. It will probably be obvious to you what's wrong with it and you'll see whether or not you can fix it once you take a look. But as I said, it's simpler to just replace it.
If you click above on the "More from Monster" link, then go back through the listings to the last page, you'll find "Changing my fuel gauge sender unit" about a dozen from the bottom -- the date was 6 October. In that post you'll find detailed instructions on how to remove and replace your sender unit. The whole job will take you less than 20 minutes and you don't need any special tools.
When you order a new sensor it may come with a little piece of wire inserted for shipping -- that wire keeps the float from moving. Of course, you need to remember to pull that out before you install the new part! I forgot to mention that in my original post. Also, if you open up that original post and look at the string of posts attached to it, you'll find other interesting info on fuel sensor units.
Let me know if you have any questions. Trust me, Robin -- this is a job you can easily do yourself.
