That was when the E and S cars got Bosch mechanical injection, which you don't want to mess with at this age unless you have lots of money. The T cars were detuned with milder cams and still had 2 3bl carburators, Solex clones of the previous year's Webers, not the really crazy 6 1 bl Solexes of the '65 and early '66 cars (mine was a late '66, but I shall restrain myself from posting pictures of my shelves of autocross trophies). Many T cars also had a softer suspension or even a weird self-leveling springless front suspension set up, most of which were replaced before the cars got more than a few months old. Since Porsche fans are also modification addicts, any T may have acquired S or E swaybars, and even cams and pistons by the time it was 2 years old, so you'd better find out what is really in the motor if the widow has any documents.

The best news, '69 was the first year of the lengthened wheelbase, which drastically reduced the terminal oversteer problem.

The worst news, even well into the '70s, Porsche sixes had frequent hydraulic timing chain tensioner problems, especially on the left bank, so you'd better try to find out which of the many unsuccessful modification kits are now in the car, and prepare yourself to upgrade again soon if the car has been sitting for any length of time. If the motor makes a sound like someone dragging a heavy chain across a concrete floor when it's first started, that's the timing tensioner problem.

And, to misquote the Beach Boys, "They do rust, rust, rust; they do rust, rust!" Check inside the trunk and also from below where the front pivot for the suspension a-arm bolts to the chassis (new panels are available, but require care in welding in because that point controls suspension geometry). Also check the right rear fender area around the dry sump oil reservoir -- on mine even the reservoir itself eventually rusted through and I got a big gulp of gravel into the oil tank on a rally on day. Oh to be back in those youthful days again!
