Just had the muffler replaced on my '83 and it made no difference except for the noise level - my car ran fine before and after.
There are many, many issues that can cause the symptoms that you described. Assuming that the plugs, distributor cap, rotor and wires are OK, I would first look at all of the intake manifold connections and vacuum lines. A leak in any of these could cause the stated problems.
