Mark,
Check the fluid level. I use hydraulic fluid, others use non-detergent motor oil.
Check for leaks. Check the bypass valve position, accessible behind a flap in the trim at the back of the luggage compartment, in the trunk, towards front of car on the right.
If you manually move the top up or down without opening the bypass valve, you could cause the cylinders to blow their seals.
Order the "Saab 900 Service Manual, 8:5 Convertible" from the dealer, p/n 0340240.
The manual descibes removing the hydraulic system, complete, for bleeding. I removed the system on one of my 91 convertibles, drained out the old fluid, flushed and refilled. The pump/reservoir needs to be higher than the cylinders (the reason for removing). The problem I was having is when you let off the button the top would continue moving (gravity??). Now with it properly filled and bled, when you let off the button, it stays in place.
I use Hydro-E-Lectric for replacement parts: Top, headliner, heated rear window. They also have cylinders. I bought the hydraulic fluid at a local parts store, bought a gallon, used less than a quart flushing and refilling.
Good luck
Jon
