The raw gas smell is likely fairly simple, could either come from the fuel pump under the trunk floor or the canister which is supposed to absorb these odors, usually at the front. if any of the piping gets kinked in this vent system it can fill the car with gas odor.
the Automatic has no 4th, and it is somewhat noisy on the highway even in a 5speed.
brakes, when i drive my families cars, (volvo, new and old toyota) the brakes seem to be too "grabby," meaning that virtually no pressure on the pedal brings the car to an ubrupt halt (at low speeds) and none of my saabs have reacted this way, so what you describe may be normal
I would ask other saab owners in your area (female if you are) where they bring their car for service... youll want a good shop, as saabs often need little adjustments and can become finicky with old age. they can check these things for you. I believe that regular changes of transmission fluid will help the auto go farther, annual is probably best. be easy on the car in the cold. If you have the old records of service for this car they can be a good thing to look through to know what has and has not been replaced. typical for this car at this mileage and age are head gasket and auto trans. if these have been replaced and you are good about the regular maintenance the car should not give too much trouble.
Sorry for the length. I wish you the best of luck, and when the car needs a look at come here first to narrow down the field.
Enjoy it!
Josh
