'85s and the biodegradable wiring harness

Hey, if my '85 doesn't have a cat in it (actually, it's a gutted cat) is it less prone to having the wires disintegrate under the console? I'm just wondering because after driving and then stopping and tinkering with the APC box, when I had the seat up I felt the floorpan of the car and way back under the back seat the floorpan was warm over the exhaust. Just wondering if this is normal.. I have noticed that some wires in the engine compartment that are exposed to heat (APC solenoid connections, temp sensor connections) have lost all their insulation, and this was the cause of my car only having base boost, as the APC circuit had grounded itself against the radiator crossmember. All the wires were recovered with electrical tape, but I'm still worried. (I have had the console out 2 times and have seen no noticeable degradation of anything in there, nor any signs of heat coming from the console.)
Any insight would help calm my fears :0
TIA,
bazil
