Use the exhaust gas analyzer built into your car - the O2 sensor.

Yes, 380 ohms is just the basic setting that gets you 'in the ball park' for most engines.

Get yourself a good analog volt meter, but ideally you'd want an oscilloscope. At the fresh air intake there is a test connector. I don't have my book with me right now, but one of those pins is a buffered signal from the O2 sensor. Basically, the engine control works by varying the mixture right around perfect, swinging back and forth from slightly rich to slightly lean. You adjust the AMM to get it swinging symmetrically around that point.

If you were to hook directly to the output of the O2 sensor (but leave it in the circuit), you'd get the car nicely warmed up, and then adjust the AMM so the output of the AMM swings around 0.5 volts. It should normally swing between 0.2 (lean) and 0.9 (rich), and it swings back and forth around 1 per second. The test connector has a buffered signal that you could use with a dwell meter.

As a quick check, warm up the car and measure the O2 sensor voltage (to ground) with a good digital voltmeter. Depending on how the meter samples, you may see it fluctuate, but you want to make sure it isn't stuck at 0.9 or 0.2 volts. If it is, adjust the meter until you see around 0.5 or so.
