Harold,
I swapped one on my 91 900 turbo convertible, two years ago.
I was going on a trip on a Monday morning, checking car out on Sunday. I noticed the outer boot was torn. It was okay 3 days earlier!
Anyways, I pulled the axle and cleaned it up. There was too much wear in the cv joint, so I called around the local auto parts stores. No one could get one before Monday.
I had a remanufactured axle that I had purchased for my 89 SPG, but had not installed. (I bought one for each side, and only needed one!)
I removed the cv joint from the shaft of the worn axle. I heated the ABS ring, being careful as it is made of aluminum, until it dropped off the cv joint. Before it cooled I attempted to put in on the new cv joint, but it wouldn't go on. I measured the outside diameter of both cv joints, the new joint was about 0.004" larger than the worn cv joint.
I measure the ring and there was no way it was going to fit. I then bored the ABS ring out on my Smithy CB 1220 XL lathe until it was 0.0005" interference fit. I then heated the ABS ring up until it fit the new cv joint. I let it cool and then installed the remanufactured axle with the ABS ring in the convertible.
This was completed on Sunday afternoon, allowing me to leave on time Monday for my trip.
So yes, it can be done. I was very surprised to find that the two cv joints were differant sizes where the ABS ring fits. They were both Lobro brand joints.
Measure your cv joints, if they are the same size, just heat the ABS ring to remove it. Install it on the joint and your all set.
Good luck,
Jon
