everyone says 10w-30 mobil doesnt make 10w-40 "1" and i personaly use 15w-50. i think it offers a mandatory level of protection in hot climates and under severe driving occurances. perhaps this is why most autocrossers use a thick oil as such during a race. or maybe why a 2001 M5 calls for 10w-60 in its motorsport V-8. sure, the saab is no race car, but its a highpreformance engine none the less, regardless of its output. with 90 degree heat and just getting started, i have no troubles with 15w-50. cold start is fine, there is no high rpm oil starvation, and the lifters are silent. mobil one claims that their 15w-50 has the cold flow of any other brand's 10w-30 non syn. thats enough said for me, i buy cases of 15w-50.
yet another reason i use thick oil is that saab calls for 10w-30 in new engines. My mom has a 1999 9-5 2.3 i use 10w-30 in it. but my engine at 130,000 miles isnt new anymore, the bearing gaps are larger than new and therefore need a thicker oil to support cam and crankshaft without getting squeezed out the side.
peace of mind in 90deg heat at 6000rpm and WOT, mobil1 15w-50
* i would not recomend anything but 10w-30 in a turbocharged car*
