When you hit the brakes is your pedal harder than it used too be? the noise you are talking about is very sim. to that of a bad brake booster. To check, while the car is idle'g, take a medium to large size pair of pliers and squeeze the vac. line that run's too the booster from the intake. Hold that for 10-20 sec. and release. If you hear the idle speed rise while held and drop when you release the plier's... you my friend need a Booster. Listen very carefully for the idle change because do to how bad you need a Booster = how much you will hear.
Also, if it is the Booster and say you take one out of another car for yours, don't disconnect the vac. line @ the booster. Disconnect @ the intake side and just leave the line in place. Those connections tricky as these part's get older. trying to pry out the line could mess up your part... trust me. I've had three 86t's and done it too all.
Good luck,
Fish
