Hi Anderson
Altho lot of good things have already been said about the maintenance cost of an old saab, I'd like to add my two cents.
1. These cars are fun to drive, and if you are a DIYer they can be fun to work on.
2. If you buy one, you should consider preventative maintenace: Change the oil and oil filter every 3000 miles, and replace worn parts before they brake.
3. I bought my first (and only saab) 4 years ago (1983 900 gle). I had no special interest in saabs at that time, I only needed a car to drive to and from school. That was soon to change. The one I bought had been owned by elderly couple who had taken good care of it. But, as I was soon to find out, almost every thing in the car was still OEM, (not good in a 15 year old car) so lot of things broke down and needed replacement in the first two years. It was a constant love/hate relationship, being left stranded in the Icelandic winter more often than I like to remember. But when all the usual stuff had been fixed (new head, front brake pistons replaced (twice actually) and all the other stuff you can read about here on the c900 bb) the car has not let me down once and proven very reliable (it is now a love only relationship:).
4. You have already found The Saab Net, the best place to take your saab problems.
5. Saab's are addictive, you may find yourself never wanting another car.
6. The 8 valve Bentley manual is out of print and difficult to find.
7. Automatic transmitions are no good for highway driving (only 3 speed).
8. If you like performance, there is lot of info and go fast parts available on the web.
If well taken care of, your saab can be reliable. If not, expect to spend lots of $$$ on repairs.
Keep us informed on what you do.
Best regards
Thorir Jonsson
