suddenly hotter ... i would change t-stat first.
partial drain ... open vent at t-stat, siphon by way of exp tank, about 3/8 to 1/2 in od hose/tube, send down into lower exp tank hose.
-----------------
NORMAL, HEALTHY OPERATION, AC OFF
(with OEM 88-89C T-Stat, & OEM 92C Fan-Switch)
a) Cruising ..... Runs at 50% on gage (40% with 82C T-stat), warmed up and cruising for 3-5 minutes at 40-60 mph, with AC off. True even in 90F weather. Fans should not be needed cruising.
b) Stopped ..... In hot traffic, stop and go, or at long idle, gage slowly climbs to 2/3, when fans come on, bringing gage back to about 1/2 before shutting off. This is a NORMAL cycle of the system, not a hot problem. In very cold weather, fan trip point will be a little higher on gage (3/4) than in warm weather (due to more free convection cooling of the radiator, and location of fan switch). With VW 82C fan switch, fans on at 1/2 gauge reading.
