The increased steering effort and "scratching" noise in the steering column seemed to show up one day after normal steering effort.Additionally there was a moment when the steering wheel hung up on something(seemed to be upper column) while turning. After investigating the extra effort and "scratching and binding in the column; the problem seemed to be in the area around the upper bearing or horn/airbag ring. My question is can I have two problems: a failing steering rack and a bad contact ring or can(hopefully)the extra steering effort be associated to a broken ring causing the binding. I am beginning to think the problem is isolated to the upper column since with the car on jack stands the range of steering feels fairly smooth with and without the engine running ie. powersteering pump operating and there dosnt feel to be any binding through the turning range associated with the u joints in the column. There also dosnt appear to be any fluid leaking from the rack (whew!)
I have not removed the steering wheel for fear of the airbag igniting to investigate around the steering wheel. Is this an area to stay away from ie best left to the pro's or can you safetly work in this area after disarming the airbag? Bentleys gives plenty of caution but dosnt explain the disarming procedure for the airbag. I have read several post's with regard to problems with contact rings for power to airbag.Does this ring break causing binding or is it usually just a break in electrical contact causing the SRS light to illuminate.Any comments would be greatly appreciated TIA jk
