I have had good luck with Boge's. Last a long time and don't get rock hard like some KYB's. I'd give Jim a call at sobstory (a site sponsor) @ 1-800-583-0370 for a good price on Boge's or just about anything else you might need. He's also a good source of information for a new owner, as you get your car sorted.
If you plan to do the shocks yourself, I would first track down the special "sort of oblong" socket that fits the shock shaft end. Without this socket, it is nearly impossible to tighten the top mount on the driver side front shock. this socket makes it a snap...hold the nut and turn the shaft. Lisle makes the socket, but most stores are out of stock. Also available from snap-on and mac tools for more $$.
Synchro problem might be cured with a switch to Redline MTL (drain from differential cover and use new gasket). Or it might be a bad pilot bearing in flywheel(replace when you do the clutch). BTW if you get a crunch going into reverse, odds are high that the pilot bearing is bad and/or you have some corrosion on clutch shaft. As posted, you can shift into another gear just prior to reverse to avoid crunch. But if the car is right, you don't have to.
