Hi all. I'm hoping someone out there has some experience with this problem that will help me. I'm stumped!
I have a '91 N/A with the LH 2.4.2 Fuel Injection. This problem began very suddenly after the car was running great. The car starts right up from a cold start, then immediately jumps up to 2000 RPM and stays there for about 5 seconds. Then the idle speed slowly decays down to 1200 at which point the car suddenly dies. Total time from start to die is about 10 seconds. The first day the car acted funny it had already been driven and warmed up and was running fine. I left it for 20 minutes, then when I started up it was running rough and tending to stall unless I nursed the gas. The CE light came on as I nursed the car home. I pulled the fault codes which were for "O2 compensation incorrect at idle", "O2 compensation incorrect while driving", "incorrect air/fuel mixture", and "air/fuel mixture too lean". The present situation of start, high idle, decay, stall, began once the car cooled down, and has been happening ever since. Since I have a very new O2 sensor, and since this problem happens right from a cold start, I don't think the O2 is the culprit.
Checked for vacuum leaks. Nothing obvious. I did try to pull a vacuum by sucking on the vacuum line going to the ELCD valve atop the charcoal cannister. It didn't seem like the valve was holding any vacuum. (Perhaps I should replace it??) But plugging the vacuum port that normally leads to the ELCD did not beneficially change my start and stall problem.
I did the the ECU assisted component testing diagnostics routines (using a test switch connected to pin 2 of the test connector under the rear seat, but closing the test switch BEFORE the key is turned on, instead of after like I do for pulling fault codes), but I've never done these before and don't know if the tests came out normal or not. I heard the noises for fuel pump, injectors, AIC, ELCD, and radiatior fans. There were two tests in the sequence that I did not understand what they were for. One flashed the code "12432", and the other was "12414". Anybody know what these tests are supposed to check? Also, there is always a faint buzzing coming from my AIC valve whenever the key is turned on. Is this normal?
The other things I tried were: Disconnected Air/Mass connector before starting--car started but then immediately died (no jump to 2000 RPM etc.). Disconnected AIC connector before starting--started and idled at 500 RPM for a few seconds then ran very rough and tended to stall but I could keep it going by nursing the gas (this seems like "limp home" mode I think). So I'm concluding that both the Air Mass Meter and the AIC valve are at least doing something, though perhaps one of them is on the way out but I don't know how to tell.
Car has recently had new plugs, plug wires, rotor, cap, air filter, O2 sensor. I haven't done the fuel filter yet (too cold to climb under there!)--could this be it? Any help appreciated!
