Accumulator replacement Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Thu, 26 Jun 2003 09:58:02 In Reply to: hot stop n go traffic - ABS lights on-BurlyB correct, JohnK, Thu, 26 Jun 2003 08:55:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Flushing the brakes is always a good idea. If the problem is the ABS pump not running, then replacing the accumulator is a waste of money and effort.
Where the accumulator (bomb) might come in - if the accumulator isn't working, the ABS pump will run more, and that running more can cause it to overheat and shut itself down.
Do a simple test - with a nice, cool car, start it and wait until the ABS pump stops running. This will be some 30 seconds or so after the ABS and Brake Fluid lights go out. You must wait until the pump stops and the system is at full pressure. You'll hear the buzzing stop. Then pulse the brake pedal hard and fast until the ABS & BF lights come on. If it took 12 or more pulses to get the lights on, then the accumulator is OK. 5 or less, the accumulator is shot. Somewhere in the middle, then the same for the accumulator.
It's best to try this after you've flushed the brake fluid, assuming that you haven't changed fluid in a while (more than 2 years). Old fluid has trapped air, and unlike brake fluid, air compresses. That screws things up in terms of pressure and the amount of work the ABS pump need to do.
