I'm guessing a vacumn leak. Maybe pinch off some hoses to see if you can find the leak. The small hose that goes to the PCV valve on the back of the valve cover is inside a fat hose. That small hose gets hard and brittle, and if you have a crack you won't find it.

Also, the short rubber hose on the charcoal cannister in the right front fender well is one of my favorites.

When the car is cold I believe the FI system commands a richer fuel/air mixture. It measure the air flow with the Air Mass Meter, AMM. When you have a vacumn leak you have air getting into the engine that is bypassing the AMM, leading to a lean mixture. The engine running better when it is cold tells me you have an air leak after the airmass meter.

Check the clamps that hold the induction system in place also. They might loosen with age.

FIX THIS PROBLEM QUICKLY!! I bought a nice turbo convertible that had fried and broken an exhaust valve because of vacumn leaks. Interestingly enough, the previous owner had a Saab shop take care of it, and they never found the leaks. I bought the car $2000 below market value as a result.

Regarding idle "hunting" when cold...remove and clean the Idle control valve (I rinsed it with gas) and lubricate with powdered graphite lock lubricant. Check the hoses to it while you are at it...they could be the source of the air leak. If they are loose I secure them with a zip tie.

Bon Chance!
