Dipstick won't go in!

Had a call from someone who bought an 85 900T 16 valve with auto transmission. Claims she couldn’t get the engine dipstick back in after checking oil level. Assuming some sort of clumsiness, I went over to help. She was right! It would take her (or me) a good minute of fiddling to reinstall the dipstick. I told her I’d pull her fill tube at oil change time and have a look. In the meantime, has anyone encountered this situation? Never happened to me through seven Saabs!
