Hi, all.
This Xmas and New Year, we're going to be heading from Plymouth (southern UK) to Senegal (Equatorial West Africa, other side of the Sahara) in an '88 2-dr 900i as part of the Plymouth-Dakar challenge (http://www.plymouth-dakar.co.uk for the event, http://www.coldsoba.com/desertvikings for our team site). It's all in aid of charity, and the car and all equipment will be auctioned off locally or donated to local charities when (if!) we get there.
We're obviously going to need to do some serious preparation for it, not least because the event rules allow us a maximum of £15 preparation cost on top of the £100 car buying budget....
First thing is to throw the silly space-saver spare away, and lob a couple of proper spares and jerry-cans on a roof-rack. However, with three people and a weekend's worth of beer in the boot, we're already suffering grounding problems on rough back lanes.... Coil Spring Assisters (the rubber ones that wedge between a couple of coils) should help? I think there's going to be some guards going under there as well....
Any cooling system tips? The rad's probably going to need to be changed (the fins are corroding to dust!) - Anything else to specifically look at? Thorough heat-soak testing in heavy traffic last weekend seemed to show the needle sitting consistently just around half-way.
Any suggested locations for a secure valuables storage box (money/passports etc)? I can't seem to shift the back seat base up, even though it looks like it should pivot (it's a 2-dr) - is there a secret? Any other location suggestions?
Any other tips or thoughts at all?
If there's anybody in the UK feels like helping out by donating some bits - we could definitely use some wheels and tyres, and a roof-rack!
Cheers!
Adrian
