Some believe the higher detergency of motor oils ends up flushing particulates into the bearings after gear oil has let them accumulate in the nooks & crannies. The A-Rx should've mixed things up pretty well in that respect, so I'm wa-a-a-ay beyond the edge of fear on that!

I briefly mentioned the desire to switch oil types to two different Saab garages, & the "fear factor" was high at both places. One place said they use only RedLine syn gear lube, but then went on to say the heat kills Saab trannies by 120k miles (in their experience) anyway! (I'd say they need to find a new lube!) The other place just flat-out said "don't do it!" They were OK with using motor oil if it's always been used (provided you're also adding BG's Multi-Gear Concentrate to it), or switching from motor oil to gear oil, but not with switching from gear oil to motor oil.

I don't recall what other theories may exist. Viscosity's similar between the different types of oils, so that's not a concern. Additives are different, & that's a point to consider. But lately I've been reading that gear oil & its additives don't hold up very well in high heat conditions. Since the C900 tranny is a huge heat-sink for the engine, & gets poor airflow 'cuz it's hidden behind the clutch assembly, I felt that motor oil was the way to go. Some folks like to add BG's Multi-Gear Concentrate if motor oil is used in the tranny, but I think it simply adds more components to break down & accumulate.

Interestingly, shortly after I had the mechanic's flush done I emailed Townsend, asking him if he'd had any similar experiences. He told me he expected my tranny to be dead in a few months due to the entire flush-&-change (to SS2) process! I guess it's because it didn't die then, that I'm willing to do all this to it now.

How's the weather shaping up out there?
