SPG flavor varied by year...
1985 & 1986 – SPG has same suspension as Turbo but with front and rear sway bars. Same
engine and power output (160hp) as Turbo. It had all Turbo options like electric sunroof,
leather, and fog lights. Plus the special 3-spoke wheels w/ V-rated Pirelli tires, lower body
cladding, and trim deleted (no "turbo" badges, no side molding). Special colors - '85 was black
only, '86 was gray only.
1987-1990 - Lower springs, stiffer shocks (also available as dealer sport susp package),
special wheels, lower body cladding, trim deleted. In 1987-89 colors are limited to gray and
black, and in 1990 red was added. Power output is 175hp (other Turbos were 165hp).
1991 - Last year of SPG. Same as above. Colors are red, black, beryl green.
1991 - convertibles - Colors are yellow "bumble bee" and platana gray. These had the
special 3-spoke wheel and lower body cladding, but they did not have the higher power
output or any other "SPG" things.
1993 – from the FAQ (link below) In the spring, a 900 Turbo Commemorative Edition
was offered. This special Saab was only available as a three-door Turbo with a manual
transmission, in black, of course. With 185 Hp it was the highest performing 900 ever,
and along with an improved suspension, it became the quintessential Saab 900 Turbo.
Only 325 examples were produced, each one numbered with a Commemorative Edition
plaque. All included a wooden instrument panel facia and special alloy wheels with polished
outer rims and gray centers.
