An old trick my father uses to keep cats off the kitchen counter, is to sprinkle the counter with red chili or jalepeno powder, then when cat jumps up there, get it on his feet, he licks feet, then steam shoots out of his ears like on cartoons. I have no idea if this would work on possums, it might even attract more.
Good luck, i would be investing in a good bb gun,
