I'm betting it's the crank position sensor, but the real clue is whether or not the tach drops to zero while the rest of the instruments stay on/normal. I had this same problem a year ago. I bought a new sensor from eEuroparts for $60 & had to splice it into the harness myself. (The wire colors were mis-matched; it was the positions which were important.)

If the entire instument cluster dies, then it's probably the wiring connections to the ignition switch (where the key goes).

If it is the ckp sensor, you'll probably also want to do the front main seal, alternator bushings, & all the belts. Maybe the A/C idler pulley too.
