My car (same car, remember)
Auto- 20-22 when you're nasty, 22-23 when you're not
Manual- 26 in the middle of the winter when people are driving 25 miles an hour and you're really nasty to it, 32-36 during the summer. One tank I got 38. That's 560 miles or so.
This is why my auto-to-manual swap paid for itself (in fuel alone) in under six months.
Other figures- 1985 900, not in the best of health, 28-34, five speed.
1990 900 (best analogy to your car- 16 valver) 27-33, again not in the best of health. Five speed.
Coming soon!!! 1992 S Convert (2.1 liter, 16V, 5 speed) ??? We'll see. 18 gallon fuel tank :-) That means 600+ miles, don't tell the parents yet
Top ten ways to increse fuel mileage in a 900:
10. Correct tire pressures
9. Don't use the AC unless you really, really have to
8. Fuel system in good condition- clean injectors, relatively fresh oxygen sensor, correct mixture, unplugged catalyst
7. Ignition system in top shape- cap, rotor, NGK/Bosch plugs, wires
6. Make sure your brakes (and emergency brake cables) are not sticking on
5. Limit top speeds to 65-70 on lower-geared nonturbos remembering that wind drag is exponential with speed
4. Stay out of shopping malls, traffic jams, and other forms of suburbia- accelerate and brake gently, or better yet accelerate slowly and brake pretty fast, but the main idea is that you KEEP MOVING once you start the best that you can
3. Tailgate or draft SUVs especially the huge, heavy ones that can't possibly brake quickly... suckers! Just be nice to the semis
2. Coast down hills and into speed zones
1. Get rid of the POS automatic gearbox
