I fixed my turn signal on my '87 during my lunch hour at work. It had the common problem of not staying in position. Here's what I did (about the same as what I've read here):
1. remove stalks from the car, remove turn signal portion from the assembly.
2. lightly drill the two metal "rivets" (not really rivets, but they look like them) that hold it together.
3. seperate the stalk from the metal housing, grab the little metal contact that fell on the floor.
4. clamp the housing onto a vise, leave return lever and springs connected.
5. use a 3/16" endmill in a drill press to remove the remainder of the "rivets" (studs).
6. use the same 3/16" endmill to slightly increase the cylindrical divits that the stalk's "ball & spring" (not really a ball, but whatever). I think I removed maybe 1/32" of material.
7. use a #43 (0.089") drill bit to drill holes were the rivet/studs use to be. Follow up with a 4-40 tap.
8. blow off metal shavings, I did not remove any of the existing grease.
9. reassemble using 4-40 screws instead of the old rivets.
10. put back on the car, isn't that cruise control connector a pain?
