How to check for tranny damage with blown motor?

The car in question is a 1986 900 turbo automatic. The engine had been making a metallic rattling sound for a while. It came as no big surprise when it finally bought the farm. My question is whether the tranny would get destroyed as the motor went belly up. Is there a way for me to determine this without removing the engine and tranny from the car? This tranny never gave me a lick of trouble and the harder I pushed it the smoother it shifted. I know the consensus of this board regarding the auto tranny but...... I will remove it if it is still functional.
