I had a SAAB 900 Turbo as my second car, but I was taught to drive in a Volkswagen Rabbit diesel. I have to say that of the people I know, those who learned to drive in a stickshift almost invariably are more competent drivers than those who started in automatics. Something about having to look up the road to select an appropriate gear, means you are always looking up for dangers too. Also, it's much harder to be scarfing drive thru food and blabbing on the cell phone in a stick.
I would second the 900 non-turbo reccomendation. Benefits being the lack of boost will make the car easier on the tranny while learning clutch control, and most of the non-900 cars, especially the 4-doors, do not scream young driver to the cops with radar guns. Should put a stop to any girl racer ideas too...
I definitely think SAABs are great learner cars, with capable and predictable handling, simple enough that you aren't insulated from the car's functions by computers, climate control, and the like. I know when I teach my kids to drive, it will be in a vehicle with as little mollycoddling electronic aids as possible. Learn in an automatic, with ABS and Traction control etc. and that is what you are stuck with for life, that and the idea that the car is in control and you don't have to do anything right up until you lose control on a snowy day...
