You don't say what year/engine, which matters. If 8V, then the cap wire layout is sort of a cross design, with the far right post being #1, and since the firing rotation is counter-clockwise, the top post is #3 and so forth. As for the 16V, here's where my description get's complicated. The Haynes manual gives the #1 position to the far right (or bottom right) post as well, but my 16V has a 9000 distributor, and it's #1 position is the top left post.
