Rotor Thickness

So .. I'm bad. Usually I just take a quick look at the rotors to make sure they aren't too scored, then just stick new pads in. Car is a '93 900TC.
I guess the indys all turn the rotors anyway and check them for thickness. Sounds like a lot fail the thickness test. Why is this critical? Heat? Billing enhancement?
Unlike the evil BMW rotors the Saab ones never seem to warp!
What does everone else do .. yeah I know .. rotors are cheap!
