Best to do it all cat back regardless of what's broke- Posted by Devin [Email] (#2469) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Devin) on Thu, 25 Aug 2005 18:05:32 In Reply to: DIY $120 cat back, diskullman, Thu, 25 Aug 2005 16:09:31 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I replaced my header and then the rest of my exhaust, including the middle pipe and the muffler, within like six months, and it would have been easier to do it all at once. The parts are pretty cheap. I did it in the front yard. Your header's likely still good, and it's hard to separate the header from the cat and the cat from the mid-pipe. I took off the three bolts at the header by battery, and the two bolts at the brace and dropped it all off the hangers. Then slid it out from under the car and use a dremel tool to cut the rusty old bolts. Didn't trust myself with a grinder. But the grinder would have been quicker. If you're going to replace it all but the cat, drop the header and cut the middle pipe just south of the cat., then slide the cat out from under, and do what you've got to do to get the bolts out. I used liquid wrench, a torch, a big hammer and the dremel. Be sure to get OEM quality clamps and rubber hangers. Not a bad job, but you only want to do it once! I used stainless hardware and anti-seize, but this doesn't mean I want to do it again anytime soon. I did the third part, the muffler, while lying on my back in a mud/snow puddle in march. Not recommended! wish I would have done it all in October.
