John T, sounds more like an outer CV to me. When the wheel is turned Right the balls in the outer CV travel in an angular track and as the balls cross the worn 'straight ahead' track, with every revolution of the axle, they knock. Steering right (or left) doesn't angle the axle and tripod bearing relative to the companion flange (aka. inner driver). You can replace just the outer CV or the entire axle with outer CV but be sure that the new axle shaft is exactly the same length as the old one. I usually disassemble the outer CV, clean it thoroughly and if the wear isn't too bad reassemble it with some very high pressure marine grease. When the boot is torn and the grease has been washed out a fairly small amount of wear will cause very annoying clacking. Cheers.
