You had it in 4th while working, so you must have already unlocked & turned the key to release it from reverse before starting. So after thinking about it, I'm not really sure what you could have done.
Well, take the shift lever out (3 screws in a ring around it's pivot ball). Then the top of the shifter box comes off with a couple strange 3-sided nuts. I made a tool from a socket (11mm?) by grinding 3 sides off. Once inside, there's a couple gear segments connecting the lock cylinder to the electrical switch. Mine didn't break, but the way it was put together seemed pretty straightforward. It's just a greasy mess in there.
