Well, finally after a very long procrastination (well over a year!) I have successfully found the elusive bolster bolt holding nuts in the door frames. To ensure I didn't drop them I put some silicone into the 10mm socket, pushed the socket onto the nut and went about removing the interior pieces while the silicone 'set'. It worked beautifully for both sides for both removal and installation. I found the cause of the vacuum leaks, thank goodness I had sprung for a Mity-Vac to bleed the brakes as I used it a lot on the various bits and pieces of tubing that form the Cruise Control system. The biggest culprit was the main hose from the vacuum pump up along the left fender well and in to the distribution “Y”. It was atrophied where it made the turn in through the grommet. Replacing that hose with a new one resulted in no vacuum loss but I decided that the effort to remove all the bits a pieces to get at the brake and clutch pedals and check the hoses was an exercise I didn’t want to repeat any time soon. So now everything is ‘new’ the Cruise Control immediately latches on to my current speed and holds it solidly.
So folks, thanks for all your help in the ‘how to do it’ responses. The biggest help was the suggestion to remove the driver’s seat before starting – my back thanks you for that one. Cheers.
