I think it's high time you replaced your fuel pressure regulator. When they die the rubber diaphragm inside leaks and the mixture goes way rich. Typical lifespan is 135 to 150k each; I replace them as regular maintenance now. On my previous LH-equipped car, the computer had to overcompensate for the super-rich fuel mix and ended up cutting power to the fuel pump intermittently. It can go another way though... since you're very lean I'd go for vac leaks first. A good first check: after turning off the engine, wait a minute and see if you hear the usual vacuum-servo actuation noise by twisting the cabin vent distribution control. If that doesn't do anything, you've got a vac leak somewhere.
Be sure the PCV vent hose, orifice, and grommets are still attached, as well as the other intake manifold grommets. Another possibility is the throttle body to intake manifold attachment gasket. And finally, something that would go along with your all-of-a-sudden description would be a failed intake manifold gasket. Good luck, and don't hesitate to post a few follow-ups as your work progresses.
Don't blame it on your wife unless the engine was over 4000 RPM at the time.
