Transmission removal

I’m scrapping a 1981 900 T. It has been the generous donor of a turbocharger and a few other good things for one of my wife’s cars, and it is time for its soul to go to Saab heaven (need room for other Saabs). However, I’m thinking of using its manual transmission in the power train of an old Hendey lathe originally powered by line shaft belt. Here’s my question for someone with experience more recent than mine in classic 900-engine/transmission removal: Do I have to pull the engine to get this transmission out (I don’t need final drive/differential)? Trying to save myself some crawling-underneath time and effort if someone has done this! Thanks
Peter
