The most common tranny failure is the pinion bearing. The symptoms are a whine, most noticable in 3/4/5 above about 30 mph and when under load.
Worn synchros can make shifting more difficult, but can be handled by just going through the gears more slowly.
Unless its spouting oil, leaks aren't worth the trouble to fix them compared to the cost of topping up the oil as needed. There really aren't many spots for tranny oil to leak out. If you've got a leak, it's most likely engine oil.
