I recently rebuilt a plug for my 86 16V engine with a 90 distributor. The previous plastic unit on the dist body was shot and held in place with some JB Weld. A temporary fix at best, I knew I would have to one day replace that plug. I found a good used one, cutting the wires from inside the donor distributor. But, I didn't want to have to splice in any wires inside the working distributor. That meant removing the 3 remaining wires and prongs from the donor plug by depressing the lock tab on each prong with a thin metal probe (dental tool) and pulling the wire with prong out. Then I crushed the bad plug to remove the working prong and wires. I made sure to notice their order, then slipped them in the "new" plug body. They snapped in place and the new plug went on without difficulty.
If you have mismatched wire colors for a new harness plug, just keep the order in sync.
