Drove car extensively today around town, have nearly convinced myself that there must be blockage in the heater core. As posted in prev., left side is too hot to touch, right fins (and consequently air flow through icy cold. The duct-work isn't that complicated: The fan propels air through the core, temp control on dash determines the extent to which hot coolant circulates through heater core.
Heat (temp control off): coolant does not pass through core (heater valve closed).
Heat on, fan off: coolant flows through core but not distributed to cabin.
Heat on, fan on: coolant flows through core, fan blows air from outside through core and radiating fins, ductwork delivers heat to cabin.
I looked closely at scenario 2 (heat on, fan off), and the fins on the core are just the same: too hot to touch on driver's side, cold as ice on left. I'm pretty sure that that rules out the (far-fetched) possibility that the cool air center vent ductwork is corrupting my cabin heat.
The next test is to determine the ease of flow through the core: I'll disconnect the lines in engine compartment that attach to heater valve (at firewall), add some tubing to input nipple (top one, I think), and blow through to see if flow (air or residual coolant in core) is restricted.
I'll bet a doughnut that the experiment will say that the core is blocked.
Anyone have a used heater core to spare?
